IFAC & World Congresses

The first International Conference on Automatic Control, held in Heidelberg in September 1956, led to the formal establishment of IFAC in Paris on 12 September 1957, with Harold Chestnut as its founding President. The Secretariat has been based in Laxenburg, near Vienna, since 1978.

The IFAC World Congress has convened triennially since its inaugural edition in Moscow in 1960, bringing the global control engineering community together twenty-two times in eighteen countries. Korea first hosted the Congress in Seoul in 2008, under President Wook Hyun Kwon. Eighteen years later, IFAC returns to Korea, this time to Busan, for the 23rd World Congress under President Dongil "Dan" Cho.
