Abstract
The effectiveness of disturbance suppression in a multivariable control system can depend strongly on the direction of the disturbance. The "disturbance condition number" is introduced to quantify the effect of disturbance direction on closed-loop performance. As an example a two-point com- position control system for a distillation column is analyzed for various disturbance and set-point changes.
