Uncertainty and Risk in Process Operations and Monitoring
American Institute of Chemical Engineers
1998 Annual Meeting
November 1998
Miami Beach, Florida
Sponsored by the Computing & Systems Technology Division
(Area 10c) Computers in Operations and Information Processing
This session focuses on methodologies for the planning, scheduling,
operation and monitoring of processes that explicitly account for
uncertainty and risk. In chemical processes, uncertainty is often present
in many areas including the feedstock quality, process data, and behavior
of the process. There are also inherent risks involved in operating
processes, which can be magnified by the presence of uncertainty. These
uncertainties and risks not only make the processes difficult to plan and
operate, but also make it difficult to monitor the process. We invite
papers addressing heuristic, deterministic and stochastic approaches to
handling uncertainty and risk. Areas of interest might include (but are not
limited to) planning and forecasting models, data rectification, fault
diagnosis and statistical process monitoring for batch and continuous
processes. Application papers that offer insights into the interplay
between theory and practice, as well as presentations of industrial success
stories, are particularly encouraged.
Abstracts and a proposal to present form should be submitted electronically
by March 15 via the AIChEWeb at
http://www.aiche.org/docs/meetapp/programming/cfp.htm. Copies will then be
sent automatically to the session chair and co-chair. Abstracts will be
reviewed anonymously and authors will be notified of the results by May 1.
Please note that the CAST division abstract submission deadline of March 15
is earlier than the general AIChE deadline of 4/1/98.
