Mass Customisation, meant as an approach to product definition and conception that aims at a direct involvement of the consumer in all phases of its life cycle, implies making use of appropriate tools and technologies, especially in all crucial phases of manufacturing. In particular, the manufacturing systems adopted should exhibit the maximum level of integration and flexibility to cope with the extreme fragmentation of the production batches and with the very short response time that these new business model requires. A further enhancement to flexibility is re-configurability. The paper introduces these concepts and give an example for shoe mass customisation
