Device Descriptions are necessary for the integration of intelligent field devices in commissioning and maintenance tools, engineering systems or MES and ERP systems. They comprise of device models and their presentations. XML may help to enlarge the application scope of Device Description because it is becoming one of the basic technologies of the fast growing internet and various e-engineering activities. These issues are addressed from a modelling and implementation point of view.
