The key objective of this paper is to show the application of an expert system to solve the plantwide control problem. The main advantage of this method is that only operation and design data about the plant are needed to obtain a valid control strategy for the process. The expert system is demonstrated generating automatically a plantwide control structure for the Tennessee Eastman challenge problem.
