The fieldbuses have been developed for 20 years by different companies or consortia. And the research is always very active, even if the current subjects are more and more dedicated to the application design rather than to the protocols strictly speaking. This paper presents some main open issues in this area as an introduction of the session dedicated on fieldbuses and on fieldbus based systems.
