The direct sulfation of limestone is a gas–solid reaction with the formation of a solid product. Experimental results showed that the sulfation process involves nucleation and crystal grain growth of the solid product. The kinetic behavior of the direct sulfation of limestone was shown to be closely related to the nucleation and growth process and the influence of solid–state diffusion. In this paper the relationship between the kinetic behavior and the surface phenomena of the direct sulfation of limestone is demonstrated by detailed SEM images and reaction rate data. A number of aspects related to the evaluation of kinetic parameters and modeling of gas–solid reactions with solid product formation are discussed.
