Prof. Jean LÉVINE is with the Centre Automatique et Systèmes (Systems and Control Center) of the École des Mines de Paris since 1975. He is also Professor at the École des Ponts et Chaussées since 2002. He received his “Doctorat de 3ème cycle” in 1976 from the University Paris-Dauphine and his “Doctorat d'État” in 1984 from the same university. He has been an Associate Editor of Mathematics of Control, Signals and Systems, a Springer Journal, from 1991 to 1999. He founded the French information letter “La Lettre de l’Automatique” in 1988 and later on the information letter “TECNews” of the European Union Control Association (EUCA) in 1991.
His fields of interest include the theory and applications of nonlinear control, and in particular differential flatness, a concept that he introduced, with M. Fliess, Ph. Martin and P. Rouchon in 1991. He has worked on many industrial applications such as distillation columns, chemical reactors, food and bio-engineering processes, aircraft control, car equipments, cranes, machine tools, magnetic bearings and high-precision positioning systems.
