General purpose or multi-purpose Pilot Plants are common in many chemical and pharmaceutical companies, however they are not the norm in companies in other industries. Xerox has started operating a large general purpose specialty chemicals pilot plant in the early 1980s and has used it in the development of a variety of organic chemicals and specialty polymer products. The development of best practices in the new pilot plant, technical challenges, major modifications undertaken in 25 years of operation and many other pertinent technical history topics will be covered.
