Oxidation of alcohols and olefins on extended Au surfaces will be discussed and related to high-surface area catalysis. A clear connection between mechanisms in ultrahigh vacuum to those under operating conditions will be illustrated. Density functional theory calculations that provide insight into the bonding and reactivity of various defective structures on the surface will also be discussed.
