The strong demand for low-cost processes in the Pharmaceutical Industry has afforded challenging opportunities for the chemical engineer. The chemical engineer toolbox is expanded when attempting to develop or convert to continuous processes. Examples of a development protocol will be discussed when assessing a process for continuous flow. The use of kinetic data will be used to determine which type of flow system is appropriate and how best to integrate the chemical reaction with the front and back ends of manufacturing processes. The discussion will include potential pitfalls and success when converting a process process from batch to continuous.
