Tore Hägglund from the Department of Automatic Control at Lund University (Sweden) is awarded the Nordic Process Control Award. The Nordic Process Control Award is given by the Nordic Process Control Working Group for significant and lasting contributions to process control. The award ceremony took place in August 2026 at the 26th Nordic Process Control Workshop 2026 (NPCW 2026) held at the Technical University of Denmark. Tore Hägglund is awarded the Nordic Process Control Award for his contributions to PID control, which have had a significant and lasting impact on process control theory and practice. His research has bridged the gap between control theory and industrial practice, providing engineers with methods that are both theoretically sound and practically effective. Among his most influential achievements are his contributions to PID tuning and autotuning. Through the development of relay-based autotuning methods, carried out in close collaboration with Karl Johan Åström, he developed methods for the commissioning and maintenance of industrial control loops. These methods enabled automatic determination of controller parameters from simple experiments and have been adopted in industrial control products such as ABB NovaTune. Beyond autotuning, Tore Hägglund has made seminal contributions to PID performance assessment, robust tuning, feedforward control, and the understanding of practical limitations in process control. His work has helped establish PID control as a reliable, transparent, and high-performance technology that remains the backbone of process control and industrial automation. Through his publications, textbooks, and mentorship of generations of researchers and practitioners, Tore Hägglund has had an extraordinary and lasting impact on the process control community.
